Maine has an old and distinguished heritage of guides and guiding. We began officially on March 19, 1897 when the Maine Legislature enacted a bill requiring hunting guides to be registered. In that first year, 1316 guides were registered, with Cornelia Thurza Crosby, known as “Fly Rod Crosby”, was given the honor of receiving the first license. The Grand Lake Stream Guides Association is composed of Registered Maine Guides who are striving to continue traditional standards of the guiding in the Grand Lake Stream area.
